I’ll let my bride share the latest twist in the road:

Dear Family and Friends,

The oncologist called us yesterday morning to say he thought Dan was a good candidate for a bone marrow transplant.  He referred us to a treatment center in Seattle which is the premier hospital for bone marrow transplants in the world.  We have a consult with a dr. there next Fri., Aug. 2.  We also got a call yesterday from the man who is working on getting Dan the new drug, and he said he thought the application process would be complete in the next 2-3 days.  So we might have the medicine by next week.

I have been reminded again this week and comforted over and over by the verse in Ps. 139 which the Lord so clearly brought to my mind when we heard the news of Jeremiah’s death:  “All the days ORDAINED for me were written in Your book when as yet there was none of them.”  No disease or “weapon formed against us” can thwart the will and purposes of God!

We are grateful beyond words for all the prayers, all the love poured out upon us through all of you and the extended Body of Christ.  What an incredibly good and far-reaching God has set in motion through the Gospel of Christ to create an eternal Family!  My heart echoes Paul’s words:  “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!”

Love to you all,

Rebecca

  1. The Houston family will be lifting you up in prayer and want you to know that we desire to help any way that we can. I can assure you that Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (Fred Hutch) provides top level care and as far as human intervention goes they are the best. Ultimately we are all resting and trusting in the strong right arm of the Lord to get us through. FYI we are still living in Seattle and Anna hits day 80 post transplant next week. Feel free to call on us when you are in town.

  2. Here’s some encouragement for you and your family from our story . . .

I’m the wife of Pastor Truett Johnson from South Aberdeen Baptist Church in Aberdeen, WA. He was diagnosed with both kidney cancer and liver cancer in 2001, and they were both “primary” cancers, not one cancer spreading to the other.

After retrieving some x-rays from a hospital which were taken in1996 and 1999, the oncologist saw that the kidney tumor was there in both scans, but had been “missed” in the diagnosis. And, the kidney tumor was the same size in 1996, 1999, and 2001! Why did a malignant tumor QUIT growing?

That miracle of God stopping the tumor’s growth made it possible to then see the liver cancer in 2001, before it grew to the size that surgery could not be done.

Miracle #2 happened a week post-surgery when he was bleeding internally, and scans showed that it was from his small intestine. A surgical team was called in at 2am, but as the doctor was attempting to specifically mark the bleeding site, the bleeding suddenly STOPPED! The doctor came to me and said, “Bleeding NEVER just stops!” The surgical team was then sent home.

That was 12 years ago . . . doctors gave Truett little hope to even survive the 2 surgeries . . . chemo and radiation were not a possible treatment, but he has had no recurrence of any type of cancer!

Obviously, God does number our days (Psalm 139) and physicians give us their best guess at life expectancy. But, obviously, God can overrule their prognosis! We and the folks at South Aberdeen Baptist are lifting you up before the Lord, at all times of the day and night. We care . . .

  4. Mr. and Mrs. Small,

We live a short way out of Seattle, and we have a guest room. I don’t know which hospital you would be using, but if it’s convenient you are most welcome to stay in our home. We would be honored to have you and to be of service in whatever way we are able.

Lifting you up before our King,
    Simona for the Spears
